Vice‑captaincy for a Young Talent
Lee Cattermole has appointed 21‑year‑old midfielder Josh Home as Gateshead’s vice‑captain ahead of the club’s National League match against Yeovil Town on Saturday. Home joined the club on a permanent deal last summer after spending the previous campaign on loan at the International Stadium. He has improved throughout a challenging first season and has impressed Cattermole, who was appointed Gateshead manager earlier this summer.
Cattermole confirmed experienced defender David Ferguson as the new club captain and said he chose Home for the vice‑captaincy because of his daily standards, professionalism and ambition. “Josh’s daily standards, his professionalism and where he’s trying to go in the game were really important,” Cattermole told The Echo. “He’s someone that sets an example every single day.”
Leadership Philosophy
Cattermole said he will not dictate how Home should handle his new role. “Everyone does it differently. I’m not the type of guy to come in and tell everyone how to do everything,” he explained. He added that Home should simply “don’t change” and that the balance between the calm, experienced Ferguson and the eager Home will benefit the team.
The former Birmingham City academy product has spoken about his own experience captaining Middlesbrough at 18 in a Premier League defeat at Fulham. He said that the armband was offered for a reason and that for Home it is a case of maintaining his current temperament and attitude.
Upcoming Yeovil Town Match
Gateshead will hope to build on last weekend’s win against Woking when they travel to Yeovil Town on Saturday. The appointment of Home as vice‑captain is part of Cattermole’s plan to strengthen leadership within the squad ahead of the National League fixture.
